How does SMS work?

SMS is a way to deliver short text based messages over mobile cell phone networks.  The message from a sending cell phone or computer is stored in a central short message center (SMSC) and then forwarded it to the destination mobile phone. Normally text messages can occupy up to 160 characters per SMS message.  Messages of more than 160 characters appear as separate, sequential SMS messages.  A response is collected on the SMS Center where software and programming stores, manages and responds to the data automatically. This form of “mobile connectivity” can replace or augment many of the interactive features of traditionally static network devices and programs like laptops, audience response (ARS) devices, chat rooms, blogs, social networks and email.
